This is my first attempt at a query, thank you in advance for any feedback!
Dear Agent,
Spirit of Love and Duty is a young adult fantasy novel complete at 115,000 words. It is the first in a planned duology. It will appeal to those who enjoyed the political complications of Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian and the varied cultures of All the Stars and Teeth by Adalyn Grace. It may also appeal to fans of Serpent and Dove by Shelby Mahurin.
Nicoleta Avantajat-Fată Bălan recently became of age and her mother showers her with suitors. Nicoleta is not ready to leave her home or settle down with a stranger. She deters her suitors as best she can, but it is a temporary solution. As she struggles to maintain her freedom as long as possible, she comes to the realization that her feelings are more complicated than she thought. She loves her best friend, a stable boy employed by her family. Her family can never know. Her father is dangerous enough as it is, with his own dark secrets. Her mother only views Nicoleta as a political ploy to gain recognition. Love between them could never last, acting on her feelings will only cause more pain. But when he offers to run away with her, she must decide if she is brave enough to love freely and escape her fate.
Her decision is complicated when the crown prince is drawn to Nicoleta and her heat affinity. He holds an affinity for ice, which is inherently harmful to a heat affinity. His very touch hurts. But a prince always gets what he wants and will not go away quietly.
When Nicoleta discovers her father’s dark secrets, it becomes clear that marrying the prince may be her only chance to stop him. A royal marriage provides her that power, but comes with the complexity of court, a husband, and abandoning the person she loves.
With lives hanging in the balance, Nicoleta must decide if she will run away, or stay and fulfill her duty.
