Mermaid Treasure
by Angela Ricks
My mother is a mermaid.
Her emerald fin
swims in the sea.
My little fin
wiggles to and fro
as I look for her.
Where can she be?
Then all I see is seafoam–
she’s splashing me!
It’s time to search for treasure!
We gather seashells and starfish
and anything that shines.
As we search, there’s a question
on my mind.
“Mama, what is your
greatest treasure?”
Her eyes twinkle as she replies,
"Out all the treasures
I have found
My favorite one
is right nearby.”
My eyes dance over the water.
A thousand sunlit diamonds
shimmer on the surface of the sea.
“I know! It’s these diamonds.
They are sparkly
as can be.”
She laughs.
“No, the sparkle
in your eyes
is treasure enough for me.”
Maybe her treasure is something…
bigger.
I point to the shining sun–
a golden gem
beaming with light.
She laughs and brings her head
close to mine.
“Your smile is brighter
than the sun in the sky.
Each time I see that treasure,
it lights up my whole life.”
Maybe her treasure is on the land.
Our fins glimmer and gleam
as together we race toward the sand.
A wave curls
and leans toward me
dropping something
in my lap.
A small shell opens and I see…
a pearl!
It’s smaller than the sun,
and sparkles less than the
diamonds dancing on the sea.
It is smooth and soft
and small in my hand.
Could it be…?
Mama shakes her head.
“Holding your hand through life
is a greater treasure to me!”
My hand in hers,
we swim back to the sea.
"Wait!" I stop as tears well in my eyes.
"Mama, I've searched the sea, the sky, and the sand.
Are you sure your greatest treasure
really is nearby?”
Her arms wrap around me;
she pulls me in tight.
Scooping water in her hands,
she says, "Look inside."
I lean in close.
All I notice are ripples
then the water stills and
at last I see.
Her greatest treasure of all
is…
ME!
